A Script for Dynamic Overshadowing
Override Visuals is a browser-based script designed to temporarily modify the visual appearance of Dynamic Overshadowing, a web-based solar and shading analysis tool developed by Dr. Andrew J. Marsh.
Dynamic Overshadowing:

The script allows users to adjust elements such as the background, ground plane, and grid directly in the browser without modifying the original source code or server files.
Override Visuals is intended for architects, researchers, students, and other users who want a cleaner or more customized visualization for analysis, teaching, presentations, and screenshots.
How to use it
-
Open the .md file with Notepad or your preferred text or code editor.
-
Edit the desired options in the USER SETTINGS section.
-
Locate “Script – Copy from below to the end” and copy only the script below this line, excluding the introductory header.
-
Open or refresh Dynamic Overshadowing, then press F12 to open the browser Developer Tools and select the Console tab.

Key Adjustments in the Script
Visual Settings
Override Visuals can be customized directly in the USER SETTINGS section located at the beginning of the script. No other part of the code needs to be modified.
The settings use true and false values to enable or disable specific options. Colors are defined using hexadecimal color codes, such as #FFFFFF for white or #808080 for gray.
Background Color
The CUSTOM_BACKGROUND option determines whether the script preserves the original Dynamic Overshadowing background or replaces it with a custom color.
-
false — preserves the original background.
-
true — uses the color defined in BACKGROUND_COLOR.
Use BACKGROUND_COLOR to specify the desired color in hexadecimal format.
Examples:
-
#FFFFFF — white
-
#F2F2F2 — very light gray
-
#CCCCCC — light gray
In the default configuration provided with the script, the background is set to white.
Ground Plane
The SHOW_GROUND_PLANE option controls the visibility of the horizontal ground plane below the model.
-
false — hides the ground plane.
-
true — shows the ground plane.
When the ground plane is visible, its color can also be customized.
The CUSTOM_GROUND_COLOR option determines whether the original ground color is preserved or replaced with a custom color.
-
false — preserves the original ground color.
-
true — uses the color defined in GROUND_COLOR.
The GROUND_COLOR setting only has an effect when SHOW_GROUND_PLANE is set to true.
Ground Grid
The SHOW_GROUND_GRID option controls the visibility of the grid displayed on the ground plane.
-
false — hides the ground grid.
-
true — shows the ground grid.
When the grid is visible, CUSTOM_GRID_COLOR determines whether its original color is preserved or replaced with a custom color.
-
false — preserves the original grid color.
-
true — uses the color defined in GRID_COLOR.
The desired color can be specified in GRID_COLOR using a hexadecimal color code. In the configuration shown in the script, #808080 corresponds to gray.
The grid color setting only has an effect when SHOW_GROUND_GRID is set to true.
Default Configuration
In the default version provided with the script:
-
the background is customized to white;
-
the ground plane is hidden;
-
the ground grid is hidden.
These settings can be freely modified before running the script to adapt the visualization area to different types of analysis, presentations, teaching materials, or screenshots.
